Reel Bad Arabs

How Hollywood Vilifies A People

Dear all,

Our Eyes Wide Open documentary film series continues Sunday, April 6 at
8pm with "Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies A People" by Sut Jhally.

Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies A People (2006)
Sunday, April 6, 8pm
Arcobaleno
Via Pullino, 1 (metro Garbatella, see directions below)

Film synopsis: "This groundbreaking documentary dissects a slanderous
aspect of cinematic history that has run virtually unchallenged from the
earliest days of silent film to today's biggest Hollywood blockbusters.
Featuring acclaimed author Dr. Jack Shaheen, the film explores a long line
of degrading images of Arabs -- from Bedouin bandits and submissive
maidens to sinister sheikhs and gun-wielding "terrorists" -- along the way
offering devastating insights into the origin of these stereotypic images,
their development at key points in US history, and why they matter so much
today.

Shaheen shows how the persistence of these images over time has served
to naturalize prejudicial attitudes toward Arabs and Arab culture, in the
process reinforcing a narrow view of individual Arabs and the effects of
specific US domestic and international policies on their lives. By inspiring
critical thinking about the social, political, and basic human consequences
of leaving these Hollywood caricatures unexamined, the film challenges
viewers to recognize the urgent need for counter-narratives that do justice
to the diversity and humanity of Arab people and the reality and richness of
Arab history and culture."

Obama

Obama, Philadelphia 17th March 2008

This is where we are right now. It’s a racial stalemate we’ve been stuck in for years. Contrary to the claims of some of my critics, black and white, I have never been so naïve as to believe that we can get beyond our racial divisions in a single election cycle, or with a single candidacy – particularly a candidacy as imperfect as my own.

But I have asserted a firm conviction – a conviction rooted in my faith in God and my faith in the American people – that working together we can move beyond some of our old racial wounds, and that in fact we have no choice is we are to continue on the path of a more perfect union.

For the African-American community, that path means embracing the burdens of our past without becoming victims of our past. It means continuing to insist on a full measure of justice in every aspect of American life. But it also means binding our particular grievances – for better health care, and better schools, and better jobs - to the larger aspirations of all Americans -- the white woman struggling to break the glass ceiling, the white man whose been laid off, the immigrant trying to feed his family. And it means taking full responsibility for own lives – by demanding more from our fathers, and spending more time with our children, and reading to them, and teaching them that while they may face challenges and discrimination in their own lives, they must never succumb to despair or cynicism; they must always believe that they can write their own destiny.

Ironically, this quintessentially American – and yes, conservative – notion of self-help found frequent expression in Reverend Wright’s sermons. But what my former pastor too often failed to understand is that embarking on a program of self-help also requires a belief that society can change.

The profound mistake of Reverend Wright’s sermons is not that he spoke about racism in our society. It’s that he spoke as if our society was static; as if no progress has been made; as if this country – a country that has made it possible for one of his own members to run for the highest office in the land and build a coalition of white and black; Latino and Asian, rich and poor, young and old -- is still irrevocably bound to a tragic past. But what we know -- what we have seen – is that America can change. That is true genius of this nation. What we have already achieved gives us hope – the audacity to hope – for what we can and must achieve tomorrow.

See here the entire speech.

In the white community, the path to a more perfect union means acknowledging that what ails the African-American community does not just exist in the minds of black people; that the legacy of discrimination - and current incidents of discrimination, while less overt than in the past - are real and must be addressed. Not just with words, but with deeds – by investing in our schools and our communities; by enforcing our civil rights laws and ensuring fairness in our criminal justice system; by providing this generation with ladders of opportunity that were unavailable for previous generations. It requires all Americans to realize that your dreams do not have to come at the expense of my dreams; that investing in the health, welfare, and education of black and brown and white children will ultimately help all of America prosper.

An Election Without Meaning

An Election Without Meaning

 By Peter Phillips

Will November 2008 bring a meaningful change to America? Will getting rid of George W. Bush and Richard Cheney without impeachment or indictment really make a difference? Will a 600 billion dollar war/defense budget be cut in half and used for desperately needed domestic spending? Will the ninety-three billion dollars profits in the private health insurance companies—those parasitic intermediates between you and your doctor—be used instead for full health care coverage for all? Will Habeas Corpus and Posse Comitatus be restored to the people? Will torture stop? Will all students in public universities be able to enroll for free? Will the US national security agencies stop mass spying on our personal communications? Will the neo-conservative agenda of total military domination of the world be reversed?

The answer to these questions in the context of the current billion dollar presidential campaign is an absolute no. Instead we have a campaign of personalities and platitudes. There is a race candidate, a gender candidate and a tortured veteran candidate, each talking about change in America, national security, freedom, and the American way. The candidates are running with support of political parties so deeply embedded with the military industrial complex, the health insurance companies, Wall Street, and corporate media that it is undeterminable where the board rooms separate from the state rooms.

The 2008 presidential race is a media entertainment spectacle with props, gossip, accusations, and public relations. It is impression management from a candidates’ perspective. How can we fool the most people into believing that we stand for something? It is billions of dollars of gravy for the media folks and continued profit maximunization for the war machine, Wall Street, and insurance companies no matter who is determined the winner in November.

We must face the fact that the US government’s primary mission is to protect the wealthy and insure capital expansion worldwide. The US military—spending more than the rest of the militaries of the world combined—is the muscle behind this protect-capital-at-all-costs agenda, and will be used against the American people if deemed necessary to support the mission.

Homeland Security, the North American Command, mass arrest practices with the FALCON raids, new detentions centers, and broadened “terrorism” laws to included interference with business profits are all now in place to insure domestic tranquility through extra judicial means if needed.

The two party corporate political system is having a HOMELAND presidential campaignHillary, Obama, McCain, Election, Lacking, Actual, National, Debate. It is time for real change, but it will only come with a social movement of reform in the tradition of the progressive, labor, civil rights, anti-war movements of the last century. We need to use all of our activist, legal, and political resources to reverse these threats to freedom. Naomi Wolf says it is not too late to prevent totalitarianism, but we have to act fast.

Robert F. Kennedy challenges Gross Domestic Product
Added: 2 weeks ago
Views: 50,626
Forty years ago, Robert Kennedy, gave a speech about the real wealth of Nations and GDP. Three months later he was assassinated.

What is the GDP, the Gross Domestic Product? A measure of the growth of society? The transformation into money, an abstract concept, of our health, of our time, of the environment? No one has ever calculated the COST of the GDP. The damage of empty sheds, of useless merchandise, of lorries that run around empty like maddened insects, of the destruction of the planet. No one has ever estimated the value of wasted time in queuing, the wasted years working to produce useless objects. Of the years thrown away to buy useless objects created by advertising. The time, The Earth, the life, the family (the only important ones) are concepts that are too simple for the GDP. A monster that devours the world. It eats it and accumulates it. It digests it and transforms it into nothing. The equation GDP=wealth is an enchantment. The useless products do not become useful because someone buys them.

”only when the last river dries up
when the last tree is torn down
when the last animal is killed
only then will you understand that money cannot be eaten.”
Creek Prophecy

Speech by Robert Kennedy, 18 March 1968, University of Kansas.
”We will never find a purpose for our nation nor for our personal satisfaction in the mere search for economic well-being, in endlessly amassing terrestrial goods.
We cannot measure the national spirit on the basis of the Dow-Jones, nor can we measure the achievements of our country on the basis of the gross domestic product (GDP)
Our gross national product counts air pollution and cigarette advertising, and ambulances to clear our highways of carnage.
It counts special locks for our doors and the jails for those who break them. It counts napalm and the cost of a nuclear warhead, and armored cars for police who fight riots in our streets. It counts Whitman's rifle and Speck's knife, and the television programs which glorify violence in order to sell toys to our children.
Yet the gross national product does not allow for the health of our children, the quality of their education, or the joy of their play. It does not include the beauty of our poetry or the strength of our marriages; the intelligence of our public debate or the integrity of our public officials.
It measures neither our wit nor our courage; neither our wisdom nor our learning; neither our compassion nor our devotion to our country; it measures everything, in short, except that which makes life worthwhile. And it tells us everything about America except why we are proud that we are Americans.
It measures everything, in short, except that which makes life worthwhile. And it tells us everything about America except why we are proud that we are Americans.”

The March 20, 2008 US Declaration of War on Iran

John McGlynn

March 20, 2008, destined to be another day of infamy. On this date the US officially declared war on Iran. But it’s not going to be the kind of war many have been expecting.

No, there was no dramatic televised announcement by President George W. Bush from the White House oval office. In fact on this day, reports the Washington Post, Bush spent some time communicating directly with Iranians, telling them via Radio Farda (the US-financed broadcaster that transmits to Iran in Farsi, Iran’s native language) that their government has "declared they want to have a nuclear weapon to destroy people." But not to worry, he told his listeners in Farsi-translated Bushspeak: Tehran would not get the bomb because the US would be “firm.”

Mission not yet accomplished? Heil, Congress of US!

Dear peace activists,

(Please forward widely!)

Today marks the beginning of the 6th year of the occupation of Iraq. In Washington DC, actions of mass civil disobedience are planned as well as protests throughout the country.

Despite the fact that public opinion has long turned against the war, Congress continues to fund it. The past Saturday, we held a protest in Rome with the "Ides of March: Et tu, Congress?" street theatre (see photos: http://www.peaceandjustice.it/g-march-15-2008.php)

Today, we are calling on all of you to send a fax -- with just one click from our web site -- to Clinton and Obama demanding they use their roles as Senators to block funding requests to end the war NOW, something both claim should happen immediately on their presidential campaign sites. Let´s hold them accountable!

SEND A FAX: http://www.peaceandjustice.it/filibuster/ (includes sample letters for both that you can personalize)
Send this message to your friends and family asking that they join in and  send a fax from our site. Let´s keep those fax machines ringing!
On Sunday, we also held a fundraiser for Iraq Veterans Against the War  and raised Euro 252 ($400) in support of their Winter Soldier investigation.  Thanks to everyone who contributed. We urge you all to watch the riveting testimony in which 50 veterans and active duty soldiers describe the reality  -- that we rarely, if ever, hear or see -- of the occupations of Iraq and  Afghanistan: http://www.ivaw.org/

If you weren´t able to make it to the fundraiser but would like to support the work of these courageous soldiers speaking out to end the war, and truly at the forefront of the anti-war movement in the US, you can donate online via the IVAW web site: http://ivaw.org/support

And finally, this is also marks the 3rd anniversary of our group. Over the
past three years we have organized and participated in numerous protests,
screened over 40 documentaries, written letters, sent faxes, including 1,700
to Rep. Conyers calling for impeachment, worked together with the Italian
anti-war movement and met people from all over the world. We´ve grown
stronger as a group and are as determined as ever to continue to do our
part to change this world. Thanks to everyone for all you do!

Winter Soldier

Hi,

I usually don't send videos around (as I said once before), but this one -- the testimony of a soldier during the Winter Soldier hearings -- is something to see and hear, indeed.
The guy does not describe atrocities (committed in Iraq) of the magnitude that other soldiers have described during the hearings.  But
his social consciousness is exceptional.  It's in two parts:

Patrick

P.S.  You can hear the live hearings at http://ivaw.org DON'T enter "www.wintersoldier.com" since that is a right-wing site, set  up to make the real winter soldiers (of the '70's and today) look bad.

No End in Sight (2007)
Sunday, March 16, 8pm
Arcobaleno
Via Pullino, 1 (metro Garbatella, see directions below)

Film synopsis:
"The first film of its kind to chronicle the reasons behind Iraq´s descent into
guerilla war, warlord rule, criminality and anarchy, No End in Sight is a jaw-
dropping, insider´s tale of wholesale incompetence, recklessness and
venality. Based on over 200 hours of footage, the film provides a candid
retelling of the events following the fall of Baghdad in 2003 by high ranking
officials such as former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage,
Ambassador Barbara Bodine (in charge of Baghdad during the Spring of
2003), Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson, former Chief of Staff to Colin Powell,
and General Jay Garner (in charge of the occupation of Iraq through May
2003), as well as Iraqi civilians, American soldiers and prominent analysts.
No End in Sight examines the manner in which the principal errors of U.S.
policy largely created the insurgency and chaos that engulf Iraq today."

CITY LIGHTS NEWSLETTER

CITY LIGHTS NEWSLETTER

The International Zapatista Campaign at City Lights

City Lights is proud to announce the release of THE FIRE AND THE WORD, a comprehensive, illustrated history of the Zapatista movement, available in the U.S. for the first time in both English and Spanish-language editions. 2008 commemorates the 25th anniversary of the clandestine founding of the Zapatista movement in the jungles of Chiapas — and in that time a small group of dedicated activists and indigenous organizers has grown into an international movement, the inspiration for countless direct-action groups around the world. The Zapatista International Campaign will heighten its call to action in the coming months on the U.S. leg of its tour, which will include musical concerts and recordings, a photo exhibit, and the release of THE FIRE AND THE WORD, which captures the personal stories, political actions, and thoughts of the movement's prime participants. In the past four years, the Campaign has been presented in over 150 cities around the globe; now, for the first time, this border-crossing activist movement will travel through U.S. cities, hosted by community collectives and literary organizations.

As a companion to THE FIRE AND THE WORD, City Lights presents THE SPEED OF DREAMS by Mexico's enigmatic Zapatista leader, Subcommandante Insurgente Marcos. From a retelling of indigenous myths and legends to searing critiques of the U.S. war in Iraq and clandestine radio broadcasts from the jungles of Chiapas, THE SPEED OF DREAMS is a profound selection of writing that gives voice to the literary and critical genius of Latin America's greatest living writer/rebel.

WORDS AGAINST WAR:

Youth Speaks poets
MC James Kass of Youth Speaks

It's been five years since the United States government invaded Iraq. Most Iraqis and most of the US public oppose the occupation. The US has spent $2.8 trillion on war and the military since 2003. Over 600,000 Iraqi civilians have been killed according to a recent Johns Hopkins study, and nearly 4,000 US troops have lost their lives. It's time to take action and speak out loudly to stop the war, end the occupation and bring the troops home now.

On March 19, the 5th anniversary of the US invasion of Iraq, there will be demonstrations around the world and a number of direct action protests throughout downtown San Francisco. Please join a selection of San Francisco Bay Area poets and writers who will be reading in the streets and joining the protests. We encourage everyone to come out to show their support for a withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq and an end to this senseless war. City Lights and Direct Action to Stop the War invite you to an anti-war read-out, featuring SF Poet Laureate Jack Hirschman, performance artist Guillermo Gómez-Peña, author and activist Rebecca Solnit, and MC James Kass of Youth Speaks who'll bring along a posse of dynamic Youth Speaks poets. Join us at 11:00 am at the corner of Montgomery and Market Streets, and then join a noontime action at the SF offices of California Senator Diane Feinstein.
