In the middle of the Indian Ocean, 1000 miles from the nearest landmass, the U.S. military base Diego Garcia represents a strategic location for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, CIA "black sites" and control of Middle East oil supplies.

The tiny island, a remnant of the British Empire, also harbors a tragic and little-known history. During the '60s and '70s, the U.S. and British governments conspired to forcibly remove the local population, the Chagos, in order to "clear" the island for the base.

David Vine, professor at American University in Washington, spent 8 years researching the hidden story of the top-secret base. He'll discuss the Chagossians and the deceit and conspiracies that led to their expulsion, the use of the base in the current wars, the network of U.S. bases on foreign soil and the human costs of empire.
